Trying to help your clients fill out application activities sections in the way that will reflect most positively on their candidacy?

Pro tip: don’t start by typing activities into the applications!

Our questionnaire will ask students for need-to-know information regarding their extracurricular involvement, with specific instructions for formatting. I require students to fill out this questionnaire in advance of our “Application Meeting.” Since they arrive with the information presented in a clear way, that’s half the battle. We organize it together (combining some activities, cutting others, and so forth), discuss the accuracy of the information, assess the order in which the activities are listed, and work on tightening up the language.

A great letter of recommendation is chock full of specific anecdotes. But have you ever sat down to remember specific anecdotes for thirty kids from a twelve-month period? When I was a director of college counseling at an independent school, I realized that we needed to transform our recommendation letter process and I began having each student complete very detailed questionnaires chock full of helpful anecdotes from class.
